New life growing out of a lava bed, Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park, BC
Canada’s last volcanic eruption occurred in the Nass Valley around the year 1700 (some other sources give the date of the eruption as 1760). Today, the vast lava beds still dominate the Nass Valley about 80km north of Terrace. A guided 3km hike through old growth forest leads to the viewpoint above the crater. An interpretive centre in a traditional Nisga’a longhouse informs visitors about the Nisga’a legend that accounts for the lava as well as geological causes.
